From Damascus to Quechee

May 11, 2021 by Khalid Mamlouk 1 Comment
QLLA member Khalid Mamlouk with his wife, Christina, and their daughters Claire and Lily

Thousands of miles away and over a quarter century ago, my journey to the US started. Reflecting on that journey fills me with fond memories. After graduating from Damascus University in Syria with a Master’s in Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Chemistry, I decided to follow my siblings’ footsteps and move to the US to pursue a postgraduate degree, and fulfill my dream of curing cancer, the disease that killed my father.

I was not sure when I left Damascus in November 1994 that my stay in the US would be permanent; and I could not have imagined my homeland would be devastated with an endless war and civil unrest.

When I arrived in Dallas, where one of my brothers and his family lived, I was picked up from the airport by my cousin who took me directly to a few parties. I was introduced in a hurry to the Thanksgiving Holiday, which happened to coincide with my arrival day. It is a wonderful celebration, seeing friends and family. I was also introduced to American football and became an instant fan of the Dallas Cowboys.

Although I had visited the US prior to immigrating here, my impression as a child was different. I became more worried about a long-term plan; would I become more fluent in English? Would people accept me, respect my culture and religion? Would they see that I am different and look down on my education? Everything was new and overwhelming, including simple tasks such as filling up the car with gas or picking shampoo at the grocery store. So many choices and such a fast-paced lifestyle.

Fast forward many years, I am now close to fifty years old. I am thankful for the many blessings in my life. I have a loving family: great wife, Christina who grew up in New Orleans and two beautiful young ladies, Claire and Lily. With the grace of God, many achievements were accomplished including getting my Doctorate in Pharmacy, working in oncology drug development and having the privilege to own a second home in Vermont.

While we have families dispersed in cities across the world like Dubai, Damascus, New Orleans, Dallas and many others, Quechee became the center of our universe. Many of our friends are here; and our families enjoy visiting our lovely community and the many natural beauties that Vermont has to offer, including the sweet, accepting people.

One of my most vivid memories is of the day we bought our house. After dropping our little girls at ski school with Paul, Christina and I stopped by the general store, on route 4 close to I-89, to buy firewood.

The store was magical; it reminded us of a scene from the movie Frozen. The salesman offered us fresh barbecue; I asked if it was beef or pork? He paused; then asked me if I was a Muslim? I was taken back by his question and thought that it is unusual to be asked, and most people would be unaware. After some hesitation, I answered yes! He was fascinated since he had never met a “real-life Muslim;” and he let me know that he was immersed in a poem book by the Rumi about the Sufi tradition; he made the correlation. This experience moved my wife and me; fortunately, for us it was not the only time we have been moved by Vermonters.

We have been so pleased to find that people in Vermont are sophisticated and different than what we have experienced elsewhere in the US. They are more accepting and curious about what they don’t know, and not as judgmental of others. That was my dream when I chose to settle in the US. My family and I aspire to live in a world that accepts our differences and embraces our diversity. This was the US I envisioned before I stepped foot in this country. I am proud to be a Syrian American, proud of my heritage, and so happy and grateful to have my family close and far and my great community in Quechee.

Meet Your Neighbors: The Sanders – The Magic of Five Miles

February 26, 2018 by Molly O'Hara No Comments
Barry and Pat Sanders

Pat and Barry Sanders are often seen running along Quechee Main Street, in fact, they are known for it, at least by other Quechee residents.

Pat and Barry met running, so it’s only fitting that they are continuing the tradition. They were working at the same company where Pat was head of human resources. In fact, Pat was the first person Barry met at the company. She had organized a “lunch bunch” running group for employees and Barry joined. The rest, as they say, is history.

A love of sports
Barry says that running every day in the morning is a great way to find the time to connect as a couple, to just chat without interference and catch up on day-to-day business. Pat is the real runner among the two. She ran the Montreal Marathon and qualified for the Boston Marathon with an impressive time of 3:18. She ran two more Boston Marathons after that as well as one in Newport and two Maine Coast Marathons, eventually moving on to triathlons for a while.

Now, Barry says, five miles seems to be the magic number for them and he has a hint for the “running geeks” in the area. “From the Club to the Strong House Spa and back is just about five miles, and if you go the other way from the Club to almost all the way to Taftsville Bridge and back that is as well. So, you can do a five-mile loop either way and run along Quechee Main Street. A flat and scenic run.”

Running is not the only activity Pat and Barry enjoy together, they also ski. Barry grew up in Saratoga Springs, New York, and Pat in Groveland, Massachusetts, both skied throughout their lives and had even come to Vermont to ski. Because of their familiarity with the area and the middle ground between families, when Pat and Barry got married in 1995, they chose the Woodstock Inn as the perfect setting. “It is such a beautiful place, and I remember many of their employees are still at the Inn, and some have moved to the Club,” Barry says.

Settling in Quechee
When the Sanders’ decided they were ready to purchase a second home, Barry put a two-hour limit on the distance, and Quechee fit right in, plus they knew the area well. In 2004, they found the perfect house when a colleague Pat worked with years before had become a local insurance agent, and he said he knew of a home that was likely coming up for sale, as word-of-mouth is so often the case with those that find homes in Quechee. Barry says that he and Pat are on the 50/50 plan, wherein they spend about 50 percent of their time up here and the other half back at home in Massachusetts.

It’s been an incredible experience for them both and their dogs. Previously, Barry and Pat had an Australian Shepherd mix who was a gorgeous blue merle color named Bear. In fact, his coloring was the inspiration for the name of Barry’s management consulting company, Merle Management. Barry says that often, others know the dogs before they know the people, and that’s because it’s a wonderful area for dogs. So many people have dogs or love visits from neighboring dogs, and their new dog, Dewey (named after Dewey’s Mill, of course), is equally in love with Quechee as they are!

The Quechee area is full of places the two of them love to visit and activities they both enjoy. “We like Friday nights at Davidson’s Bar, friends, friends-to-be, staff; it’s the best place to relax and hear good stories. We enjoy Sundays too on Dewey’s Deck,” says Pat.

As a former competitive dance skater, Pat still looks for opportunities to skate and shared an excellent winter activity with me. When Lake Morey in Fairlee, Vermont, freezes over, they plow around the outside. It’s about a four-mile loop around the lake, but, of course, not everyone has to make that whole trip! You can rent Nordic-style skates that you strap on to your boots. Apparently, they are much easier to skate on for longer distances.

Pat and Barry are avid golfers, both in Quechee and Massachusetts. Barry explains that one of his favorite places in all of Quechee is the 18th tee of the Highland Golf Course. “In the fall with the foliage, with the balloons going up, it’s one of the prettiest golf spots in all the world. You’re about to tee off, and you see the hill into the Lake Pinneo valley, and every once in a while you see a balloon rising. If we have guests visiting, we always try to play that course.”

Barry had one more piece of advice to share with all of us, “If you’ve never seen fireworks at eye-level, it’s the most amazing thing. If you watch them from a hill, at eye-level, it’s a whole new dynamic.”

Mike, Michael, Daniel, Robert, and Susan

Mike DeLaus and Susan Feindt and their three sons Michael, Robert, and Daniel, live in Andover, Massachusetts. Sam and Janet Nork, also from Andover, introduced the DeLaus family to Quechee. Susan says they like being part of the Quechee community because of “the people” and the fact that is very family-oriented. “Everyone that we’ve met through the ski team have been great,” says Susan and adds, “We really like getting away from school, work, just relaxing. There is always something to do outdoors no matter what the season.” Noting that the scenery and surroundings are beautiful, Susan says, “We want to be in Quechee whenever we can. We are together as a family more in Quechee than at home.”

Meet your Neighbor: The McDougalls

January 17, 2018 by Greater Good Media No Comments
Meet the McDougalls

In 1979, while living in our home town of Lowell, MA, a friend invited Deb and I and, at that time, our three little boys — Rob, Peter, and Mike — to use his house in Quechee in the winter. We wound up having a great week and loved every aspect of the Quechee lifestyle.

From 1979 to 1982 we rented, and in 1986 we bought our home on Hard Road. In 1990, having been impacted by the recession, and with lots of college tuition on the horizon, we decided we needed to become a “one home family.” Despite having lots of professional advice about where the best career opportunities were, we chose Quechee, and have never had a moment of regret! Our kids received a great education in the Hartford schools, and four of our five still reside in Vermont.

Frank
What’s one of your favorite meals in Quechee?
The Pizza and salads at Quechee Pizza Chef.

What’s your favorite Quechee memory?
There are many. Three generations of our family golf on our beautiful courses, race days on the ski hill, and the eight years of hosting the Vermont Special Olympic Winter Games. And especially our son Mike’s and his wife, Emily’s, wedding at the club.

What’s your favorite activity to do with your family?
Anything and everything. Plus counting our many blessings.

What is one of your favorite family traditions?
Our year-end family gathering to celebrate Festivus; especially the “Feats of Strength Competition,” which is usually won by Deb.

Deb
What’s one of your favorite meals in Quechee?
A special dinner or lunch at Simon Pearce with my “date” of 45 years.

What’s your favorite Quechee memory?
In recent years, it was our son Mike and Emily’s wedding that was held at the Quechee Club. And when the McDougall extended families gather together for a wonderful fall weekend.

What’s your favorite activity to do with your family?
I always enjoyed following Sarah and her brothers at a golf tournament or skiing together on “The Big Hill” when they were all younger. Now its great to watch our grandchildren and their parents enjoy everything that Quechee has to offer.

What is one of your favorite family traditions?
One of my favorites has to be our Thanksgiving celebration after we moved here full-time, Frank and the boys along with a few of their football teammates started playing football on Thanksgiving, and the “Turkey Bowl” began.

Rob
What’s one of your favorite meals in Quechee?
Outside of my Mom’s great cooking. My favorite meal in Quechee would have to be a chicken sub from Pizza Chef, “dry with cheese.” I’ve been eating those since high school.

What’s your favorite Quechee memory?
It probably has to be the weekends and school vacations on the ski hill in Quechee growing up.

What’s your favorite activity to do with your family?
It’s great to get out on the golf courses. My favorite foursome of me, my Dad, my brother Pete and my nephew Jack gets four generations together to play, and I feel lucky every time we can do it.

What is one of your favorite family traditions?
Thanksgiving. That’s really our big holiday as a family. We all come home, and it’s just great to all be together.

Peter
What’s one of your favorite meals in Quechee?
Steaks on the grill at my parents’ house.

What’s your favorite Quechee memory?
The many longtime friends I’ve made over the years of skiing, playing golf, and working at the Quechee Club.

What’s your favorite activity to do with your family?
Skiing on a powder day at the Quechee.

What is one of your favorite family traditions?
The Turkey Bowl football game each Thanks¬giving morning.

Mike
What’s one of your favorite meals in Quechee?
Dana’s By The Gorge for breakfast.

What’s your favorite Quechee memory?
I got married at the club in September 2012. Tough to top that one.

What’s your favorite activity to do with your family?
I have a lot of great memories of skiing on “The Big Hill.”

What is one of your favorite family traditions?
Our annual Thanksgiving football game – The Turkey Bowl.

Bo
What’s one of your favorite meals in Quechee?
Pizza Chef has been the long-time go-to for us. It was not uncommon for the people working at Pizza Chef to see our number on the caller ID and simply answer the call by asking “How many chicken subs tonight?”

What’s your favorite Quechee memory?
One memory that stands out is when my father decided that Quechee needed to have a St. Patrick’s Day Parade. It was probably the smallest parade in the country, but in typical Quechee fashion, we had a great time getting together and parading from the Quechee Post Office down Main Street and back. We even had a police escort and fire truck on hand!

What’s your favorite activity to do with your family?
The hard-fought Whiffle Ball games played in our driveway.

What is one of your favorite family traditions?
The holiday season always brings out the best in McDougall family traditions. To conclude most of our family holiday gatherings we do feats of strength. Another great tradition is the re-enactment of the “Christmas Miracle Shot heard round the house.” Pete made a miracle basketball shot from our front porch to our hoop located across the driveway. Every year, we draw a name out of a hat to see who gets to try to make the “Christmas Miracle Shot” so far nobody has made the shot since young Pete did back in the early ’90s.

Sarah
What’s one of your favorite meals in Quechee?
Pizza Chef, of course!

What’s your favorite Quechee memory?
Skiing all day with the family.

What’s your favorite activity to do with your family?
Watching football or any sport, with everyone home.

What is one of your favorite family traditions?
Family Thanksgiving/any time we can all get together.
